Three Things to Know About my Daughter: A Birthday Post

Three Things to Know About my Daughter: A Birthday Post

  • She’s taller than me.

  • She has bigger feet.

  • Both of these things have been true for the past 15 months.

Three reasons why this matters:

First - This kid made me a mom a quick 13 years ago. I am privileged to watch her dynamic and thriving life. And on her birthday weekend, we celebrate.

Second - She reminded me this weekend that she is closer to college than she is to kindergarten. She told me that when she thought about that, it made her sad. Growing up makes her miss things and wish they wouldn’t change. But she is also really excited to think about life as a “grown-up.” So we talked a lot about how it’s OK to be sad and excited at the same time. That means your life is meaningful, fulfilling, and promising. For that privilege, she should feel grateful. Then I told her that watching her get older makes me miss things and get excited, too.

And then I cried in the bathroom. I guess we are both growing up.

Third - She is now a front-seat rider. Although has been taller than me for months and can no longer borrow my shoes (thank goodness!), she has spent the last 12 years in the back seat. No exceptions. No drama. If you don’t know why this is important, click this link. These are the kind of decisions that you can make to help keep your kids safe, and make birthday milestones even more memorable.

Don’t let them grow up too quick. Back seat until 13. And, to my First, I’ll promise to be your biggest champion as you enjoy the ride.
